A. Recent Activities :

1. June 14/15 - 2Day-1Night sightseeing/golfing tour to Malacca

On June 15 early morning, 35 participants, including alumni with their families and friends, kicked off their memorable and enjoyable journey to Malacca, Malaysia.

After our check-in at Hotel Equatorial, which is located within a short distance from the center of the town, we proceeded on our group lunch at a local well-known chicken rice restaurant.  We were served with the mouth watering chicken rice balls and tender chicken meat.  After the delicious meal, there was another even more refreshing dessert, the cendol, to quench our thirst.  There were many variations of desserts popularly served at the store.  One of the best was the grounded ice red bean paste cendol in rich coconut milk.  I believe nobody will forget that icy-cool feeling, indulged in the "ice kacang", and the cost for such a refreshment was only a mere RM3!

After the heavy meal, we went to the Baba-Nyonya Heritage Museum.  This was the ancestral home of three generations of a Straits-born Chinese Baba family and the building has been converted into a stunning museum that preserves the unique legacy of the Babas.  Apart from sightseeing, we also went for shopping because Malacca is truly a shopper's paradise.

In the evening we had our wonderful seafood dinner with Karaoke and games. Everyone enjoyed themselves very much and we ended the day with a night shopping at "Street of Antiques" and our supper with coffee, toasts, and "Char Kway Teow", etc.

The next day started off with a free and easy morning for our alumni to enjoy the hotel facilities with their families.  For golf lovers,
they went for an 18-hole golf game at the Tiara Country Club.  Afterward, we all gathered at the hotel restaurant to have a delicious Japanese buffet lunch.  Coincidentally, it was the Father's Day and we all returned to Singapore with fun and bags full of happy memories!

2. June 27 - Happy Dinner at Cafe de Amigo

At the monthly dinner, we had many members and families participating.  We were very happy to finally put a face on our alumni member Kenneth Lo who has been quietly supporting us but was too busy to join our activities until recently. Kenneth is an electronic engineer. Good to hear that he will be able to see us more. Dickson Tang is another member we have not seen in a long time. Partly due to his busy traveling schedule for his employer, the IT research firm Gartner. Can you spot the young faces in the picture below?

4. July 20 - Wine Appreciation at Cafe de Amigo with Japanese buffet dinner at Hotel Miramar

At a result of the enthusiasm from the participants at the June 27 dinner, a special wine appreciation session was organized on the knowledge of wine. There were 19 participants, including 9 alumni, family and friends.
Francis Kwong who had recently joined our Alumni attended our activity for the first time.  His cheerfulness and humour had left a distinctive impression on all of us...

Elena Lui finally appeared again since AGM. She is as charming as ever. Even though she is hesitant about alcohol she still came to see us and support us.

Dominic and Michelle came with a mission - to bag themselves with necessary knowledge for their honeymoon trip to Europe three days after the gathering.

If you cannot spot Tommy the speaker and the restaurant owner, he's the big guy with his 'signifying' suspenders.

In the end of the two fun hours, everyone had one glass of sparkling, two white, two red and one sweet wine, and a rating paper to fill up!

D. Information on our Alumni

1. Francis Kwong - New Member to the Chinese University of Hong Kong Alumni Singapore Chapter

 (Written by Mrs. Peggy Kwong)

Back in 1984, on a very cold winter night in a pub next to Baptist Hospital in Kowloon Tong, I met a guy who was a postgraduate student from the good old Chinese University of Hong Kong. At the time, he has long hair, wore a pair of gold frame glasses and said he’s a biochemist. I have always wondered why a biochemist needs to drink 5 pints of beer every Friday night. He told me life in CU was hectic and hardwork, he needed to have a break and go to this “local drinking hole” to refresh himself after a hard week’s work (since when is 15 km from University become local?).

Charming as a young man, he had finished his Ph.D. study with CU in 1987. He was one of the only three students who graduated with this honourable degree within his department that year. Sir Wilson (the Hong Kong governor then) presented the degree to him by tapping both his shoulders with the sword and it was indeed a grand and memorable day.

Armed with the latest title and his newly wed wife (little old innocent me would follow him to the end of the world), he left Hong Kong and went back to England to continue his post-doctoral research work. England was not all new to him as he did his first degree with the King’s College prior to CU days. The research grant was for three years and it was carried out in both the Royal Free Hospital in London and the Biochemistry Department of Cambridge University. Within these three years of research, he made friends and traveled round Europe, still beer consumption has not gone down.

In 1990, during the economic bloom in the U.K., he was offered the job as a research scientist to work for one of the most prestigious research companies in England, The Wellcome Foundation. Indeed the research experience has proven to be both stimulating and challenging when one has left academia and entering into a result oriented commercial environment. He could not let the opportunity slip when he was offered a job as the Scientific Advisor for the company in Asia back in 1994.

This has been 8 years since Dr. Kwong has started working in Singapore, The Welcome Foundation was sold and the subsequent owner has merged with other entities. In this fast moving Asian economy, he has changed jobs and worked as a director in this current company for the past four years. Still within the medical field, the company is one of the few medical marketing companies in Asia. This job has brought him to travel around Asia, met new friends and broadened his horizon tremendously.

Long gone are the young lad’s beer drinking days, now he drinks whisky and smokes cigars, his passion is golf and fencing. Being an old romantic as he always has been, he drives his MG (1972) to work everyday and he adores his two children, Vincent (9) and Samantha (7), who has taken over from her mom to wrap her Dad around her little finger.

2. Alumni Lui Hah Wah Elena who is the Associate Professor of the National Institute of Education in the Nanyang Technological University had presented at the Worldwide Conference on Self-esteem and Peak Performance in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (14-16 July 2003) on some research findings in Singapore on the topic: Self-esteem, Psychological Well-being and Career Development.

Ms Lui Hah Wah Elena lectures and supervises teachers in Guidance and Counseling in the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.. She has been representing Singapore in the International Council of Self-Esteem since 1998. She obtained a B.Soc.Sc. Degree from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1968 and three Post-graduate Degrees in Education from Michigan State University (MSU) in U.S.A., in the eighties. Ms Lui, a Fulbright Scholar, received the MSU Distinguished Alumni Award in 1995 and Singapore’s Public Service Award (PBM) in 1998. She was the first Visiting Fellow of John Curtin International Center, Curtin University of Technology, Australia, in 1996. Currently she is the President of the Asia Regional Association for Career Development, Hon. Chairman of the Singapore Professional Centre and a Board Director of the United Nations Association of Singapore. She presided over the University Women’s Association (Singapore) in 2000-2002 and served on Management Board of Singapore Action Group of Elders from 1977 to 2003.
