兼善天下

Extended Generosity

在澳洲華人社團有不少…，來自香港華僑之中有不少是大學生，因此在墨爾本也有不少這些大學的舊生會聚會。我自己是香港大學畢業，卻未有機會參加過香港大學校友的聚會，在上一期的《同路人》讀到田田女士寫的有關香港中文大學澳洲維省校友會所編寫的《中大人在墨爾本》，感慨良多。

這一本書記載了一些中大畢業生的移民心路、掙扎以及對澳洲的體會，確實很有意思。其中提及了一些中大校友會曾舉辦的活動，從這些活動看來，校友會已脫離純粹提供校友聯誼的機會，而是要為社區提供一些有意思的文化活動，如音樂會等，書末提及校友會參與《小扁擔》行動，推動在中國助學，我覺得是很有意思的事。

孔子說「窮則獨善其身，達則兼善天下」，大學生受了高等教育，移民澳洲，大多是專業人仕，成立校友會，除了作為彼此聯誼，在異地能互相關懷外，我覺得這些組織應該多作一些推動建設社區，為服務社會作出貢獻的工作。中大校友會能藉出售《中人在墨爾本》而為「小扁擔」助學活動籌款，我深深感覺這是很有意義的事。

我盼望更多的社團能衝開一種只為照顧自己人的心態，結合力量，成在社區中帶來更多建設的力量。我盼望其它大學的校友會也能朝這一個目標而努力。

Many members of the Chinese communities and organisations in Australia came from Hong Kong many of whom are university graduates; they in turn have formed their school ties and gatherings. I am a HKU graduate but have not yet participated in a gathering organised by our own. I was touched by an article in our last issue of Sameway written by Ms Dee Dee Lo, as she talked about a publication named ‘The Life of CUHK Alumni in Melbourne’ hosted by the CUHK Alumni in Victoria.

The book delineates the very meaningful life experiences and struggles encountered by some CUHK graduates upon their migration to Australia. Besides hosting some social gatherings for their graduate members, they have taken one step forward in organising some cultural activities such as musical concert for the community; the book also tells their participation in the ‘xiao bian dan’ program with a view to promoting education sponsorship in China, this I found very encouraging.

There is a Chinese saying “Be reserved when in scarcity; be generous when in abundance.” Most graduate immigrants are professionals; they can form alumni not just for mutual care and social purposes but as a platform for building community and social services. Through the sales of their very own publication, the CUHK Alumni has made a regarded contribution to an education fund raising campaign.

I sincerely hope that more community organisations could breakthrough a “self-serving” mentality, so that their power of selflessness could converge to bring upon a better future in the community. I hope that alumni of other institutions in various parts of Australia can also be developed with such a mentality.
