FAQs
  1. Is it necessary to "register" with the University?
Alumni associations are independent entities from the University and registration with the University is NOT a requirement. However, all of our alumni associations do maintain very close link with the University and the Alumni Affairs Office. We encourage our alumni associations to keep us informed of their latest development and activities, and send us information of their associations (e.g. Constitution and list of committee members) for our record and reference.

  2. What kind of registration is better: incorporate the alumni association under the Companies Ordinance or register the establishment of the alumni association according to the Societies Ordinance?
Most local alumni associations are either incorporated as limited companies under the Companies Ordinance of the HK Government or as registered societies under the Societies Ordinance. The following table briefly outlined the pros and cons of these two kinds of registration:

    Incorporation under the Companies Ordinance
    Pros Cons
    1. Separate legal entity 1. Relatively complicated
    2. Limited liability of members 2. Higher costs
    3. Memorandum and articles of association as an operational guide for the association

    Registration under the Societies Ordinance
    Pros Cons
    1. Simple procedures 1. No separate legal status
    2. Lower costs 2. Personal liability
    3. Unlimited liability
    4. Lack of ready-made rules to follow
