Good evening every one!  There is a familiar Chinese saying: when the husband sings, the wife echoes.  It is exactly what I am going to do.  The following is the English version of what Leo has just said:

We are delighted to have you to-night.  We welcome in particular relatives and friends from overseas and interstates.

We always like happy occasions and on this night of jubilation we will celebrate 3 rejoicings.

The first one is the so-called the greatest rejoicing in life which is wedding (大喜).  We rejoiced because our first child, Dennis was married to Dr Leonora Long last Saturday.  Yes, it was Grand Final Daybut everybody remembered it is Dennis and Leonora’s wedding, too!

You might find Leonora looks familiar.  Yes! That was she.  She was interviewed recently on Ch 10 to talk about her research on the effect of drugs on the human brain.

Perhaps you have noticed that Dennis and Leonora’s initials are DL and LL and that are exactly the initials of Leo and mine.  What a coincidence!  I believe when a DL meets a LL they are like magnets which immediately stick together and forever.

Now let us drink a toast to the newly wed.  To Dennis and Leonora!

Dennis and Leonora, we wish you all the best in your new experience and new enjoyment in sharing your life together.

Now may I present the proud parents of Leonora, Mr Alex and Mrs Laurie Long.  Thankyou again Alex and Laurie for giving your lovely daughter to Dennis and gave Leo and I a daughter.

That was the first rejoicing we are celebrating to-night.

The second one is the unexpected rejoicing (惊喜).  We rejoice because our younger son, Lawrence, as a writer and performer, has had a particular successful year.  After he won the Critics Award for the Best Australian Show in this year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Lawrence took his show to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and performed at London’s Soho Theatre with an extended sold out season.

As a result he was chosen to be part of the photo exhibition of the Australian Chinese Museum featuring Australian Chinese prominent in their given field.  On the permanent exhibition we will find Lawrence’s name along side with the late Dr Victor Chang, the heart surgeon from Sydney and the mathematics prodigy, Dr (Professor) Terry Tao from South Australia.

Good on you, Lawrence.  We are proud of you!

The third rejoicing we are celebrating is the accumulated rejoicing (积喜).  We rejoice at the fact that Leo and I have been married for 33 years.  We wake up in the morning to find we are still married to the same person.  Don’t you agree with me there is a lot to celebrate.

To express what is in our heart I would like to read Leo’s poem after I have put it into English:

The Leungs embrace gladly their quiet and contented life

By their relatives and friends they are loved and cherished

There is nothing more that they shall be in want

Than surrounding by wonderful people on this wonderful night

I would like to join Leo to wish you an enjoyable evening.  It is because of your presence that this evening has become exceptionally enjoyable.
