THE ANNUAL TABLE TENNIS
COMPETITION BETWEEN THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATIONS OF CUHK, VICTORIA,
AUSTRALIA AND PUI CHING MIDDLE SCHOOL, MELBOURNE
The annual Table Tennis Competition between CUHK,
Victoria, Australia and Pui Ching Middle School, Melbourne Alumni
Associations was held on 25th Feb (Saturday) at the home of
Albert Cherk, a Pui Ching alumnus. This is the second competition
since its inception in which Pui Ching has won the inaugural
competition in Nov 2004. As a result, the perpetual trophy was held by
Pui Ching Alumni Association for the past 15 months.
The CUHK team comprised of Prof N. N. Chan, Raymond
Lo and Tony Lau was better prepared this time in particular for team
members Prof Chan and Raymond Lo who have been sharpening their skills
by practising hard and regularly since Nov 2005. The match day was
greeted with heavy rain and thunder storm but that did not dampen the
enthusiasm of the players and supporters. The CUHK team was determined
to wrest the trophy from the current holder but Pui Ching was equally
determined to defend their title. The match took the format of 3x3
singles plus two doubles. The team that won six or more games is the
winning team and will secure the right to keep the perpetual trophy
until the next competition. The Pui Ching team started well and won
the first double match. The loud applause from their members gave an
impression that history was going to repeat itself. However this was
not meant to be as the CUHK team won the next seven games straight;
with the competition essentially over in less than two hours. Towards
the end the Pui Ching team salvaged a bit of pride by winning the
second last single. The final score was CUHK, 9 to Pui Ching, 2. The
winning margin was seven (7) in favour of the CUHK team. Doris Leung,
our President presented the trophy to Tony Lau, Captain of the winning
team afterwards and congratulated both teams for their achievements.
Photos were taken and hand shakes exchanged. It was agreed by all that
the match was played in a friendly but competitive spirit and provided
lots of funs to both the players and the supporters. The CUHK alumni
and family who came to cheer the team included Doris Leung and husband
Leo, Elizabeth Wong and her sister-in-law Freda Wong, Rita and Chung
Sang Cheng and Mrs Caroline Chan, wife of Prof Chan. Their support was
gratefully acknowledged. The day ended with a post-match dinner at a
nearby restaurant.
